In conversation with Alun Francis (Chair, Social Mobility Commission)

The Lifelong Education Institute hosted a discussion with Alun Francis, Chair of the Social Mobility Commission and Principal of Blackpool and the Fylde College. Francis, who transitioned from urban regeneration and youth initiatives to further education (FE) leadership, emphasised the transformative power of FE in career advancement. His work addresses regional disparities, employer engagement, and mental health in young learners. He challenges the notion that social mobility depends solely on university education, advocating alternative pathways like apprenticeships and technical training. Francis highlighted Blackpool’s evolving workforce needs and the upcoming Multiversity initiative, designed to support flexible learning. He also stressed the importance of high expectations, confidence-building, and early intervention to tackle economic inactivity. The discussion concluded with a call for a cohesive national education system, ensuring lifelong learning aligns with job opportunities and economic demands.
