The Government’s Modern Industrial Strategy is intended to be a clear, long-term roadmap designed to provide the stability and certainty businesses need to invest. By focusing on the UK’s comparative advantages, the strategy seeks to drive growth that is not only sustainable and resilient but also equitably distributed across the country.
However, a strategy is only as strong as the workforce capable of delivering it. While capital investment and regulatory reform are essential, they are insufficient on their own. To truly unlock the potential of our most promising industries, we must address a critical bottleneck: the skills gap which leads to a productivity challenge.
A modern industrial strategy requires a modern skills strategy.
This means closer collaboration between regional employers, local government, and education providers to ensure that the local skills offer matches the national industrial ambition, especially on the 8 Key Growth Sectors identified by Government:
Advanced Manufacturing
Clean Energy Industries
Creative Industries
Defence
Digital and Technologies
Financial Services
Life Sciences
Professional and Business Services
To explore the challenges and identify the solutions required to future-proof our workforce, we are organising a new series of online panel events: Skills for the Industrial Strategy.
In this series, we will bring together policymakers, educational experts, and sector representatives to dissect the specific workforce requirements of these 8 key growth sectors. Each event will delve into the nuances of recruitment, the role of vocational training, and the skills policies required to ensure their success.
Confirmed events can be found in our events page. We invite you to join us for these vital discussions.
